Henderson on Chronicles

The move by North Douglas MHK Bill Henderson (pictured) to obtain the Chronicles of Mann from the British Museum has been given unanimous backing by Tynwald.

The strong political statement may strengthen the Island's case but there are still misgivings that the objective may not be achieved.

Speaker Steve Rodan suggested that it might be more appropriate to request the Chronicles on permanent loan, leaving the ownership with the British Museum.

Michael MHK David Cannan argued that if the British Museum agreed to hand over the Chronicles it could create a demand from other countries to have their artefacts returned.

Speaking in support of the Motion, Rushen MHK Phil Gawne said he felt it was important to understand a little of what it contained, including the arrival of Godfred Crovan - or King Orry - on the Island:
