Home Affairs seek pension solution

by isleofman.com 2nd October 2007
The Chief Executive of the Department of Home Affairs says his department is "continuing to work on identifying a solution" to a dispute over pension arrangements for officers who come to the Island from the UK.

According to the Isle of Man Police Federation, officers with less than five years service are losing nine months of pension repayments when they switch forces.

It's claimed this has happened despite promises their pensions WOULD be preserved when they move, and the Federation is now considering legal action.

Stuart Peters reports:

Chief Executive of the Department of Home Affairs Will Greenhow says the Department is currently in discussion with other Government officials on the most appropriate and expeditious course of action to take to deliver a change to the current legislation.

He goes on "...given the complexities of pension schemes, it is imperative that any solution lies within the parameters of the police pension scheme rules and its underlying legislation. As a consequence this is not an issue that can be resolved by a simple quick fix."

He ends his statement by stating that "the Department is committed to resolving the problem."
