Gorse fire at Spanish Head

by isleofman.com 1st October 2007
The extend of damage caused by a fire on Spanish Head in Port Erin at the weekend has become clear.

Crews using off-road appliances fought the blaze for seven hours on Saturday.

Although no one was hurt, a 5,000 square metre area of the headland was burned.

The fire was discovered after dark on Friday evening.

It was spreading slowly, but the fire chiefs delayed the operation until the following day for safety reasons.

The area of headland on fire was a mile and a half from Cregneash Village and could only be reached overland via a series of tracks and fields.

Crews were assisted all day by staff from Manx National Heritage and Cregneash Farm.

Using hose reels, water jets, a high pressure fogging unit, beaters and shovels, they put out the blaze by 8pm.

The gorse on Spanish Head is scorched but not badly burned and the damage is nothing like as bad as that caused in the Bradda Head fire.

The footpath over Spanish Head remains closed from the Sound.
