Goldsmith jailed

by isleofman.com 28th September 2007
A 39 year old man has been given an 18 month prison sentence by Deemster Doyle at a court of General Jail.

Michael Timothy Oscar Goldsmith of Fairfield Terrace, Douglas, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm on Robert Scott.

The assault occurred late afternoon on January 27th this year at the defendant's mother's flat following an argument between Mr Scott and the defendant.

Stuart Peters reports:

Mr Scott was punched several times by Goldsmith causing severe facial injuries which required a stay in hospital.

Rachel Braidwood, prosecuting, said the assault was committed whilst Goldsmith was on bail for a similar offence for which he was given a two year prison sentence in July of this year.

The defendant's advocate, Paul O'Neill, said the two cases had similarities. Goldsmith felt his mother was being mistreated by Mr Scott and Mr Fayle, the other man who was assaulted in the first case.

He said he was horrified when he was shown the extent of the injuries he had caused and he wished to apologise. Deemster Doyle said Goldsmith had previous convictions for violence, and both matters had been fuelled by alcohol. He also ordered the sentence to start after the completion of the two year sentence he was given in July.
