Brew on harbour practice review

by isleofman.com 28th September 2007
Operational procedures in Douglas are to be reviewed to confirm they meet the standards recommended for Liverpool by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch report into the collision involving the Steam Packet Company's Sea Express 1 in the River Mersey.

The Department's Director of Harbours, Captain Mike Brew, welcomed the MAIB report and said there are lessons to be learned by the all the parties involved as well as by other shipping companies and ports.

Captain Brew says it appears the Steam Packet Company and its staff have broadly come out of the incident satisfactorily, particularly regarding the way in which the crew handled the incident after the collision.

The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company's river traffic control and pilotage management procedures have come in for significant criticism, and the Department of Transport will review its procedures in view of the recommendations made for good safe operational practice in Liverpool.
