Herring survey trawler

A 'super trawler' is currently in Manx waters carrying out a herring survey.

The conservation measure aims to gauge the current population of fish, and determine how successful the quotas have been.

The Voyager is a 70 metre boat from Northern Ireland, equipped with extremely sensitive fish finders.

The herring is considered as being on the Island's greatest natural assets, with the department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries keen to preserve stock and keep the population growing.

Representive for DAFF, Andy Read, urges local fisherman to get in touch with the department if they feel the vessel is disrupting their fishing:
