DoT school crossing alert

by isleofman.com 25th September 2007
A new campaign aimed at drivers who ignore school crossing patrols is to be launched soon.

The Department of Transport's Road Safety Unit is concerned at the number of drivers who run through school crossings - and will use the slogan 'Stop Means Stop'.

And drivers who fail to stop are warned their details will be reported to the police for further action.

James Davis reports:

The Road Safety Unit always runs a campaign at this time of year - after the return of thousands of youngsters to school - and as the autumn approaches.

It will highlight the vital role of school crossing patrols in keeping the Island's children safe on their way to and from school.

Despite it being an offence - patrols regularly see drivers ignore the lollipop stick telling them to stop, driving through regardless.

Patrols are told to take the registration number of vehicles which fail to stop - these are passed on to the police .

The campaign will feature radio and press ads in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile the school crossing patrol team is seeking new recruits to replace those who retired at the end of last term.

Contact the Road Safety Unit on 686671 if you are interested in this important role.
