The new junior school in Ramsey is to be called Scoill Ree Gorree, or King Orry's School.

Pupils and staff from the present Albert Road Junior School will transfer to the new ?7.5 million building in Lezayre Road next September.

The foundation stone for the new building will be laid by former Albert Road teacher Mike Boulton during a ceremony on Friday, October 19.

Mr Bolton taught at the old school, which opened its doors in 1905, for 33 years.

It has served the town ever since, but is now seen as increasingly unsuitable for modern teaching.

King Orry's school, which will be next to the new Auldyn Infants' School, will be a two storey building with 14 classrooms, a library, a double court sports hall, football pitch and outdoor teaching area. It will have the capacity for 380 pupils and funding from the Isle of Man Arts Council will equip the hall with suitable lighting, seating and flooring for use as a community performance space.

Head of Albert Road School, Mike Faragher, says it will be a new building but not a new school, as he and his staff intend to continue Albert Road's long, proud and successful history in the new building.
