Defendant threatened to kill

by isleofman.com 18th September 2007
A 20 year old man has been jailed after admitting carrying two large knives through the streets of Willaston.

Christopher John Crellin, of Willaston Crescent was given a 150 day sentence for affray and possessing an offensive weapon.

Crellin also admitted drinking in a no-alcohol zone, but Deputy High Bailiff Alistair Montgomerie didn’t impose any further penalty.

The court heard mothers had taken their children off the streets after Crellin was spotted with the knives in July.

Jason Roberts reports (text, below, from attached audio file):

The court heard Crellin’s friend had been attacked and badly injured, so Crellin went home and collected the knives before walking back to the scene, saying he was going to kill somebody.

On the way, he was intercepted by police who had been contacted by terrified residents.

The court also heard he had been with a gang of youths in Villiers Square in July when he had been involved in an incident resulting in two men being punched.

Mr Montgomerie, sentencing him, said the courts took a very serious view of people in gangs, carrying knives and assaulting people.

He added it was a sad reflection on society that someone so young could carry out such serious offences under the influence of alcohol.
