Farmer welcomes foot and mouth measures

Farmers in the Isle of Man are this evening facing fresh concerns over foot and mouth disease, after a new case was confirmed in England.

The outbreak, in Surrey, is ten miles from the centre of last month's case.

Here in the Island, the Council of Ministers special foot and mouth committee has agreed a package of precuationary measures.

There is a ban on livestock imports to the Island; disinfection mats are being put back in place at docks, ports and the airport; and visitors will be screened to identify high-risk individuals.

However, at this stage, there are no plans to restrict access to the countryside.
