Campaign for supplement goes on

by isleofman.com 3rd September 2007
The Isle of Man Pensioners' Association has responded to the DHSS ruling on the Manx State Pension Supplement by sending a four page letter to every member of Tynwald.

DHSS Minister Eddie Teare has decided once and for all that the main criterion for qualification should continue to be the payment of ten years worth of contributions into the National Insurance Fund.

The association has said for a number of years that qualification should be based on residency in the Island.

The letter sent to Mr Teare picks up on eight points he has made in the public debate surrounding the issue, and continues to argue the case for its members receiving the supplement.

Among other things it says perpetuating a "two tier society of 'haves' and 'have nots' is not worthy of a mature democracy".

The letter concludes by saying the problem can be solved by "a simple on Island decision", but adds "there needs to be the political will".

The Pension Supplement adds a further fifty per cent to the sum paid in state retirement pension.
