DTI responds to marine dredging fears

An environmental group is concerned over the issuing of a second prospecting licence for marine dredging off the Isle of Man.

It was granted by the Department of Trade and Industry earlier this month and could lead to the commercial extraction of aggregate from the seabed.

The group Manx Seawatch is worried about the effect such commercial activity could have on sea life, particularly cetaceans such as dolphins and porpoises.

Chief Executive of the DTI, Chris Corlett (pictured), says at this stage the two licences issued are for prospecting, and no commercial extraction has taken place (audio file attached):
