Catch screen produces Peel flooding

A screen, put across the River Neb in Peel and only just completed, had to be partly dismantled after it threatened to flood properties nearby.

The deluge last Friday brought a large amount of substantial debris down the river. That prevented the water flowing into the harbour and it overlapped the river banks.

To stop homes being inundated, part of the sceen was removed. Urgent talks have been held to see if there is an answer to the problem.

Director of Harbour Captain Mike Brew (pictured) says part of the problem is that there can often be little warning when a heavy rainfall produces an effect like this:
