MNH receives historic racing material

by isleofman.com 19th August 2007
You can now find out more at the Manx Museum about a woman who rocked the male-dominated world of motorcycle racing.

Beryl Swain, who died in May aged 71, entered the 50cc race in the 1962 TT.

The then 26 year-old finished an impressive 22nd and declared her intention to move onto more powerful machines the following year.

However, the sport’s governing body withdrew her racing licence on the grounds racing was not suitable for women.

Beryl’s family have now presented her finisher’s medal from the 1962 race, together with her racing leathers and helmet, to Manx National Heritage, as it enters the final month of this summer’s TT Centenary exhibition, ‘Staying the Course’.

The exhibition runs until September the 15th.
