Island communications leads the way

by isleofman.com 17th August 2007
The Home Affairs Minister has spoken out to reassure Island residents that local emergency communications meet, and in some areas
exceed, recommended standards.

Martyn Quayle was speaking following the publication of a report by the July seventh review committee of the London Assembly.

In its original report following the London bombings on July the seventh 2005, the Review Committee made 54 recommendations, of which 15 related to communications.

James Davis reports (audio file attached):

Mr Quayle believes the Isle of Man should be proud of its terrestrial radio network (TETRA) and the level of co-ordination provided by the Emergency Services Joint Control Room (ESJCR).

He says the Isle of Man is leading the way in terms of co-ordinating communications across all emergency services.

Since going live in April 2004, the control room has maintained a consistently high performance level with all 999 calls being answered in less than two seconds and more than 50,000 999 calls received.

To date, the TETRA system has handled a total of 3.6 million calls.
