Breastfeeding policy to be launched

by isleofman.com 8th August 2007
Advice and information about breast-feeding is to come from a unified source in the future.

The Department of Health, in partnership with midwives, health visitors, paediatricians and the public health division, has come up with an Island-wide joint policy.

The idea is that professionals and mothers will be able to give and receive clear and impartial information about the benefits of breast-feeding.

Kate Skinner reports (audio file attached):

The drive aims to reinforce the idea that breast-feeding is the healthiest way to feed a baby, and develop a culture throughout the local community.

According to the Head of Midwifery at Noble's, the policy will be based on the 'ten steps to successful breastfeeding' developed by UNICEF and WHO, which includes helping mothers initiate breatfeeding within half an hour of birth, how to breastfeed and maintain lactation, encouraging mothers and infants to remain together 24 hours a day and establish support groups.

The policy will be launched on September 10.
