New visitor centre plan

by isleofman.com 6th August 2007
A new interpretation and visitor centre for Douglas is set to move a step closer, with the preparation of a feasibility study.

The building identified is the old clock tower, alongside the steps up to Douglas Head Road, and the Corporation wants the town's Development Manager to submit his proposals by the end of October.

There have been no discussions about funding the project, but the 'Dhoo Glass Experience' is seen as an exciting opportunity to present the history of the harbour area.

Committee Chairman, David Christian, is confident the building is suitable for the intended use:

The Development Manager recently presented a progress report on 30 opportunities he identified, for the town, in 2004. Other suggestions which haven't yet come to fruition include a pedestrian footbridge, linking the yacht club area to the north and south quays; new pedestrian links to Douglas Head, the promenade and the town centre; and the completion and promotion of the cycleway.

There'll be more on this story in Tuesday morning's Mandate programme.
