Manx Telecom has been told a number of its small mobile phone transmitters can stay on public lighting columns in Douglas for the time being, but a request for more to be installed has been turned down.
Two months ago the Corporation said they must all be taken down, because of health concerns.
But, following a meeting between telecom officials and councillors, it has been decided no action will be taken until the outcome of a recently commissioned government report is known.
Graham Bell reports (audio file attached):
Back in June, the Works Committee recommended the five antennae, already in position, should be taken down.
Chairman, Ritchie McNicholl (pictured), accepted there was no proof of any risk, but the health of the public was too important to take any chances.
At the recent meeting with the Works Committee, the Manx Telecom staff said all emissions from the antennae were within international guidelines, and the fact they had to be 'powered down' when maintenance work was carried out of the lighting columns, was part of a 'belt and braces' approach to safety.
When asked if they could guarantee safety, the Manx Telecom staff said they could only confirm absolute compliance with present guidelines.
Despite the lack of a categoric assurance, the Committee softened its stance, and now awaits the outcome of the report by the Director of Public Health.
