Minister on foot and mouth situation

by isleofman.com 4th August 2007
There's concern in the Isle of Man's farming community, following confirmation that foot and mouth disease has been found in cattle on a farm in Guildford, Surrey.

It's a situation the authorities here are taking extremely seriously, and a number of significant decisions have already been taken.

Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne explained the latest position to Graham Bell, in this extended interview (audio file attached):

The main steps taken so far are an immediate ban on the importation of all livestock into the Isle of Man; a request to all farmers not to move livestock within the Island until further notice; a request to members of the public not to go for walks in the country, with immediate effect; and the postponement of Saturday's farmers' market in Douglas.
