60 jobs to go at Strix in Ramsey

Sixty jobs are to go at Strix in Ramsey.

Shocked staff were informed of the news at a meeting this morning (Friday).

The company, often cited by government as the ‘jewel in the Isle of Man’s crown’ when referring to successful businesses, says low labour costs in China has motivated the decision.

It leaves Strix presence in the Island at just 120.

It’s the latest blow for the Island following job losses at Charterhouse in Ramsey and BA CitiExpress.

Mr Cretney has made it clear he will be leading a cross-Government team to work closely with the individuals affected, to minimise the personal impact on them and their families by trying to help them find suitable alternative employment as soon as possible.

Ramsey MHK and Treasury Minister Allan Bell says it's very disappointing, but he's not altogether surprised, given the drain of jobs from the Isle of Man to China in recent years (audio file attached):
