DTI reviews training support

by isleofman.com 30th July 2007
The Industry Minister has emphasised that his Department will continue to totally fund the costs for apprentice training. But a wages subsidy may still go.

A statement comes ahead of a meeting with construction employers, who say they are concerned about planned changes to the training programme.

David Cretney MHK says that the situation arose after a decision by his predecessor to phase out the wages subsidy. He was concerned at the possible impact on small employees and decided to review the situation.

The response, he says, has been broadly in favour of "utilising the resources to help training opportunities across the economy, rather than providing a wages subsidy for one or two sectors, namely engineering and construction".

He says the Employers Federation has expressed support for this approach providing the Department continues to support the construction industry in other ways. Mr Cretney (pictured) says he is happy to do this.

He is due to meet employers tomorrow evening (Tues) to discuss the situation.
