Hyperbaric row in Northern Ireland

by isleofman.com 28th July 2007
The Isle of Man has been drawn into a row over hyperbaric facilities.

Last week, on two occasions, divers were flown to the Island for treatment.

Now there are calls in Northern Ireland, for a full investigation into why a decompression chamber at Craigavon Area Hospital was not available.

John Hines has more (audio file attached):

On Thursday, a man in his 50s, had to be airlifted here after he fell unconscious during a rapid ascent when diving off the County Down coast.

He had to surface quickly, causing decompression illness.

A day earlier, two divers, who encountered problems near Strangford Lough, were brought to the Island, in windy conditions, by a helicopter from Dublin.

A Northern Irish MP, David Simpson, said questions had to be asked why the ?250,000 chamber in Craigavon 'continued to sit there like an ornament.'

This was a state-of-the-art chamber - provided with the help of funds from Europe - and his information was that it was handed over to Craigavon towards the end of last year.

He understood that the chamber was technically ready for just such an emergency, and that it was a question of staff training or staff rotas.
