Anger at withdrawal of apprentice funding

by isleofman.com 28th July 2007
Construction employers, angry at the proposed withdrawal by the DTI of financial assistance towards construction apprentice training, are to meet on Tuesday evening with the Minister.

The meeting will also involve Juan Turner MLC, the political member with delegated responsibility for training and senior DTI civil servants.

The cause of the concern is the withdrawal of funding and the planned changes to the apprentice training programme at the Isle of Man College.

It's claimed this has resulted in many of the plumbing employers refusing to accept apprentices from September and there is the fear it will seriously damage the future of youth training in the construction industry.

The meeting is at the DTI training services building in Hills Meadow, Douglas, at 6pm.

All affected employers are being urged to come along.
