Cregneash decision over-turned

by isleofman.com 26th July 2007
Deputy Local Government and Environment Minister Dudley Butt has ruled that a house in Cregneash can't have a two-storey extension.

A planning row broke out after the owners of Cregville applied for permission to extend their two-up, two-down property.

The planning committee gave the go-ahead, but the case went to court when challenged by the Manx Museum and National Trust, and Deemster Kerruish ordered the appeal should be reconsidered.

The family living in the house claimed it was too small for themselves and their child and applied to increase the building’s area by around 40%.

But Manx National Heritage said it was important to keep the village of Cregneash unchanged, and the development would be the first thing visitors saw when they walked out of the car park.

Planning inspector Andrew Kirkby said he thought the proposal would harm the character, appearance and historic significance of Cregneash and that the planning committee’s decision should be reversed.

Mr Butt agreed and refused permission.
