MHK critical of planning system

A South Douglas MHK has strongly criticised the planning appeals system which, he says, is in favour of those with ‘deep pockets’ and ‘large bank accounts’.

Bill Malarkey was speaking after two recent approvals were granted for developments at Circular Road in Douglas and the Poachers Pocket in Ballasalla.

Plans by Heritage Homes to build 52 apartments on the site of the former Keig's building in Douglas were given the go-ahead - despite the fact the inspector hearing the appeal had considered an earlier application for the site amid similar concerns.

Mr Malarkey says the majority of residents who opposed the plans can’t afford to challenge the decision:
