Bomb disrupts Rally Isle of Man

by isleofman.com 20th July 2007
What's thought to be an unexploded wartime bomb has been found near the Mountain Road this evening.

The discovery of a suspicious item on the Beinn-y-Phott Road led to the last stage of today's Rally Isle of Man being abandoned.

Police now believe it is a piece of ordnance, although how it came to light is still unclear.

A bomb disposal team is due on the Island first thing tomorrow, and experts will assess the device.

In the meantime, the entire stretch of the Beinn-y-Phott Road from Brandywell Cottage to the TT course, remains closed to all traffic to ensure the safety of the public.

It's hoped the device will have been dealt with in time for tomorrow's showpiece stage, the Brandywell Classic, to go ahead.

The road closure order for the stage covers the four hours from 2.10pm, and police will give a further update in the morning.
