Freedom to Learn, Freedom to Flourish

by isleofman.com 9th July 2007
All 40 of the Isle of Man's schools will be show-casing their best work at a major exhibition at the Villa Marina starting today (Monday).

The two-day event goes under the banner 'Freedom to Learn, Freedom to Flourish'.

It will show how the Island's schools and Isle of Man College, have embraced the new 'Freedom to Flourish' curriculum launched a year ago.

Marian Kenny reports (audio file attached):

The exhibition promises a taste of the 'exciting' work currently going on in schools and the college, with not only static displays but a rolling programme of live performances and DVDs.

The Freedom to Flourish Curriculum underlined the wide scope school leaders have in shaping a curriculum to meet the needs of their pupils.

In practice that's meant schools linking subject areas - developing skills learned in english or maths for instance, in topic work

Teaching methods have emphasised independence - to ensure young people have the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century

Some schools have suspended the normal timetable for themed weeks on a single topic.

It's the first showcase of its kind - it's free - and all interested in children and the role of the education today are urged to attend.

It's open between 1pm and 9pm on Monday, and from 10am until 8pm on Tuesday.
