Port Control units review

by isleofman.com 26th June 2007
Chief Minister Tony Brown says he’ll ask the Chief Constable to review the closure of the port control units.

In the House of Keys, Malew and Santon MHK Graham Cregeen asked Mr Brown if he’d reconsider the decision.

In a written answer, Mr Brown said Chief Constable Mike Culverhouse (pictured) was solely responsible for how his officers were deployed.

But he said he was happy to raise concerns with the police force.

Jason Roberts reports (audio file attached):

Mr Brown said since the units closed, drugs sniffer dogs were regularly on duty at the Sea Terminal and airport.

He said the police were still scoring successes against those bringing drugs into the Island – with seventeen arrests in the last year for importation.

And he claimed intelligence-led policing meant more people involved with drugs were being investigated and caught.

But, Mr Brown said if MHKs had concerns he’d raise these with the Chief Constable.
