Island marks Veterans Day

Island resident's who have served their country at war will gather on Regent Street in Douglas this afternoon (Sunday) for this year's Veterans Day celebrations.

At 3.15pm, they will parade to the Villa Marina for a church service, followed by an evening of entertainment, which will be attended by the Lieutenant Governor, Sir Paul Haddacks.

His Excellency began working for NATO in 1997.

He says after the Cold War, the organisation realised the need to change from being a passive alliance of collective defence, to providing a security apparatus for member states.

This was most relevant when dealing with acts of terrorism.

His Excellency says the events of September 11, 2001, led to NATO invoking Article 5 of the Washington Treaty for the first time (audio file attached):
