Revealing answers to prison questions

by isleofman.com 21st June 2007
A revealing written reply to a Tynwald question from the MHK for Michael implies there have been many lapses in the provision of healthcare at the Isle of Man Prison (pictured) in Victoria Road, Douglas.

David Cannan asked Home Affairs Minister Martyn Quayle for a list of the 29 recommendations made by the Chief Inspector of Prisons, in a recent report.

They included ensuring clinical records were timed, dated, signed and legible; that all staff working in the healthcare department should be competent to do so; and that the keys to medicine cupboards should be held by the person in charge at all times, and not left in locks.

Edward Oldham reports (text from attached audio file):

Acting Prison Governor, Tony Hawkes, accepts many of the recommendations seem obvious.

He says the Isle of Man Prison and the Department of Home Affairs accepted the recommendations of the 2006 report and are working closely to rectify the points raised.

They moved swiftly to address the healthcare problems and appointed an expert clinical manager to assist in driving the implementation of the solutions.

They were operating in an archaic way, rather than simply being lax, but this was swiftly rectified.

He is confident they are now adhering to all standards and legislation required.
