Shock vote in Tynwald

by isleofman.com 21st June 2007
There's been a shock vote in Tynwald this morning (Weds)

Treasury Minister Allan Bell was asking for the reappointment of 4 members of the Insurance and Pensions Authority, including former Chief Minister Donald Gelling as Chairman of the body.

The Edwards report and the International Monetary Fund have asked that Chief Executives of such Authorities should NOT be politicians

Allan Bell said Mr Gelling was no longer a politician, but in a vote the House of Keys were 12 for and 12 against and the Legislative Council voted 3 for and 6 against, meaning the motion failed

A subsequent vote for members of the Financial Supervision Commission was also lost.

The result is being seen as unexpected, and a setback for Treasury
