No smoking in new jail

Plans to enforce a total smoking ban at the new Isle of Man Prison at Jurby could see the Island leading the way in Europe, according to the Department of Home Affairs.

Regulations banning smoking in public places being laid before Tynwald this week are broadly the same as those adopted in adjacent jurisdictions - but the Isle of Man will go further by NOT including the prison in a list of exempted premises.

The Department of Home Affairs has adopted a policy recommended by the senior management team of the prison that smoking will NOT be allowed by either prisoners OR staff at the new facility.
