Tynwald today

by isleofman.com 19th June 2007
Tynwald meets for its June sitting today (Tues).

The Health Service will be at the centre of debate as a plea is made for an extra ?2million to ease hospital waiting lists.

And members will consider granting another ?1.6m for improvements to the Manx Electric Railway.

It'll be a busy Question Time this month - with some 27 questions tabled.

Marian Kenny reports:

The Health Minister says the ?2 million cash injection is needed to help those waiting more than 18 months for orthopaedic and opthalmology treatments.

If granted the extra cash for the MER will be spent on improving various sections of the line during the winter.

A Select Committee report on the Manx Workshop for the Disabled will suggest organisations seeking government funding must in future provide a sound business plan.

And there's a motion calling for Manx artist Normal Sayle to be awarded the Tynwald Honour on July 5th.

There are questions on the MEA, mobile phone masts, global warming,
progress on securing a hotel in Lord Street Douglas - and whether a Manx national pop concert could be staged on Tynwald Day evening should also raise some interesting debate.
