Special status for glen

by isleofman.com 29th May 2007
Dhoon Glen in Maughold is being recognised as one of the most important natural habitat sites for wildlife in the Island.

The Glen is to receive special protection status, to ensure its diverse and rich woodland remains a safe environment for wildlife in the future.

Marian Kenny has more (text, below, from attached audio file):

Dhoon Glen is thought by many to be the Island's most beautiful and, according to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, is it also probably the most natural.

From the bluebells and ferns on the woodland floor to the native oaks growing on rocks at the bottom of the glen, it does much for wildlife conservation.

The species supported there include kestrel and chough, a diversity of moths and grazing feral goats.

DAFF is now satisfied the area is of special scientific interest and deserves protection.

Minister Phil Gawne says it will mean another piece of wild nature means untouched and safeguarded for future generations.
