Doctors in Onchan consider re-location

by isleofman.com 26th May 2007
A doctors' practice in Onchan is considering moving to new premises amid concerns about the possible health risks posed by mobile phone masts on their building.

There are now five masts on the roof of the Health Centre in Village Walk - two operated by Manx Telecom, the other three by Cable and Wireless.

Health concerns were debated at a meeting on Friday - but doctors say they are still not re-assured that emissions from the masts pose no risk to health - especially that of children and vulnerable people.

Dr Paul Emmerson (pictured) is the Island's Public Health consultant.

He insists there's no proof that exposure causes any illness. And he said levels were within the safety margin.

But he admits the jury is still out as to the long-term effects (audio file attached):

GP Dr Jim McAllister says his prime concern is to protect patients and staff.

And if that means moving elsewhere, they will.

Dr McAllister says no one can predict the long term effects - so he has to err on the side of caution (audio file attached):
