Planning objections

by isleofman.com 23rd May 2007
A contentious planning appeal in Douglas has taken a twist.

It’s emerged the independent inspector dealing with the matter has already considered plans for the site.

A 50-strong protest group last month presented its appeal against Heritage Homes’ plans to develop the old Keig's site - at the corner of Circular Road and Peel Road in Douglas - into a six-storey apartment block with parking space in the basement.

It feels the proposed development would simply be too big for the site and are now angry after learning the inspector has previously considered plans for a temporary car park on the site and related traffic issues.

The protest group has the backing of South Douglas MHKs Bill Malarkey, David Cretney, Douglas Corporation and Save Mann Heritage.

Planning appeals’ secretary Andy Johnstone confirmed the inspector considered an application for the site four years ago.

He said, following legal advice and the conclusion of the appeal, it’s been decided to allow him to prepare his report and recommendations which will then be sent to Local Government Minister John Shimmin for consideration.
