Minister defends train fares

by isleofman.com 22nd May 2007
Tourism Minister Adrian Earnshaw has defended the pricing structure for TT commuter trains.

There's been criticism recently about the ?6 return fare, and several questions were asked in the House of Keys this morning.

Some members believed the service had been priced out of the market and criticised the decision not to allow regular train users to use their multi journey or season tickets.

However, Mr Earnshaw (pictured) said a lot of thought had gone into the pricing structure and whilst more expensive than using the bus, they weren't attempting to poach passengers from those services: (first audio clip)

Mr Earnshaw also rejected a suggestion from Onchan MHK Peter Karran that his department was just "tinkering" with the problem of road congestion during TT, and if it was serious about the issue it would have introduced a free bus service for the fortnight: (second audio clip)
