Bartlett - suspended sentence

A 22 year old man has been given a 60 day prison sentence suspended for eighteen months by the High Bailiff.

Shaun Anthony Bartlett from Douglas appeared for sentence after admitting drink driving and driving without due care and attention.

Police on mobile patrol at 1.15am on March 8th saw the defendant drive his car away from Colours nightclub on Central Promenade.

Police followed Bartlett who drove into Palace View Terrace. He clipped the wing of a stationary car and realising that police were behind him, he ran off and jumped over a wall.

He was arrested and taken to police headquarters where samples provided gave a blood alcohol reading of 183 milligrammes. The legal limit is 80mg.

Bartlett's advocate said that he had been threatened in the nightclub, and concerned for his safety made the stupid decision to get in his car and drive away. He knew police were following him and now deeply regretted his actions.

The High Bailiff said the aggravating factors were there for all to see.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Mr Moyle imposed fines totalling ?1000 and banned Bartlett from driving for three years.
