A Civil Defence volunteer who has spent the last month on a study-exchange in America, says he's learned many techniques which can be applied in the Isle of Man.

David Cowley, who is currently studying Disaster Management at Teeside University, says his U.S. counterparts face many different challenges, but their communication techniques can be applied here.

And David says since the flooding in New Orleans, they are training more people based in the heart of communities to improve response times.

The Isle of Man Civil Defence has been heavily involved in planning for a potential outbreak of the H5N1 virus in humans.

David says this is high on the agenda in the States too:
