Kirk Michael surgery row

by isleofman.com 15th May 2007
A major row has broken out over a u-turn by the Department of Health and Social Security over the provision of a GP's surgery in Kirk Michael

Tynwald witnessed aggressive exchanges this morning between DHSS Minister Eddie Teare and Michael MHK David Cannan.

Minister Teare explained that the reason a previous department decision was overturned was because there was no provision made for annual running costs. He said these could be substantial, and the decision was overturned on professional advice: (first audio clip)

Mr Teare accused Mr Cannan of cherry picking, and refused an invitation to attend a public meeting in Kirk Michael to hear the views of the villagers.

Outraged by the change of policy Mr Cannan accused Mr Teare of discrimination against a section of the community: (second audio clip)
