Bill approved in Keys

by isleofman.com 9th May 2007
A Private Members' Bill, which would change the system of election to the Legislative Council, has been approved at second reading in the House of Keys.

Rushen MHK Phil Gawne (pictured) has proposed a change in the nomination period to fill vacancies, but wants the election to be completed at one sitting.

If none of the proposed candidates received sufficient votes, new nominations could be made on the same day from the floor of the House.

Candidates would still require 13 votes to be elected and, if approved, the rules would revert to the way the system operated prior to 1988.
