McLaughlin jailed on driving charges

by isleofman.com 8th May 2007
A 26 year old man has been jailed by the High Bailiff for two months.

Damien McLaughlin from Douglas appeared for sentence after admitting driving without insurance and driving whilst disqualified.

The defendant was disqualified in Northern Ireland in 2005 and 2006 for motoring offences, but he was caught driving in Douglas in Broadway on March 28th of this year.

His advocate Steven Woods said the defendant was not aware he was banned in Northern Ireland, and he gave evidence on oath of the defendant saying he had not received notification from Northern Ireland to say he was banned; neither had he received any summonses to appear in court. He was not aware of the reciprocal arrangement regarding disqualification.

Mr Moyle told McLaughlin his behaviour was contemptible and banned him from driving for two years.

He also imposed a fine of ?750 for the insurance offence.
