Police propose video ID parades

by isleofman.com 7th May 2007
Speedier identification of suspects in criminal cases will be possible, if Tynwald backs changes to the Police Code.

The new code will allow video identification to be the primary source from May the 18th.

The proposals will go before members later this month.

The change would speed up the ID process by negating the need for police to gather volunteers to take part in identity parades.

The Isle of Man Constabulary could source video clips of people similar to the suspect and hold a video parade very quickly, before the suspect leaves custody.

It's also considered a much less traumatic experience for victims, and would reduce the cost of running identifications.

On the flip side, it means suspects who are not identified will be released earlier than before.

Currently 24 of the 37 English Police Forces use the method.
