The most technologically advanced lifeboat ever produced by the RNLI will be officially handed over to the Lifeboat station in Port Erin on Saturday.

The ?125,000 Atlantic 85 lifeboat has been funded by a legacy - and is said to be a state-of-the-art vessel.

Port Erin has the honour of being the first of the 36 stations in the RNLI's west division to receive one.

The vessel itself is already in service - on Saturday the Bishop Graeme Knowles will conduct a service of dedication and the lifeboat will be officially named 'Muriel and Leslie'.

That's after Leslie Hartle from Derbyshire who left a legacy to Port Erin lifeboat because he and his wife spent many happy holidays in the area.

RNLI lifeboat operations manager in Port Erin Geoff Staples says the crew is delighted with the lifeboat - which has already been out on two calls.

The project has also been helped into fruition by the Gough Ritchie Charitable Trust which has met the costs of improving the slipway and installing new rails at the station.

The service is at 1.30 on Saturday.
