Work permit failings

by isleofman.com 24th April 2007
The Industry Minister has admitted a serious failing on the part of his department, in relation to the enforcement of work permit legislation.

David Cretney (pictured) told the House of Keys legal action had only been taken following serious breaches of legislation, or when employees found to be breaking the law didn't act on the advice of DTI inspectors.

However, he also made it clear that since he took over, following last year's general election, there had been a significant tightening of the regulations and there would be prosecutions from now on: (audio clip 1)

Mr Cretney hopes the work permit report will be available for public discussion soon.

And, In his answer to North Douglas MHK John Houghton, he revealed his inspectors made an average of 400 visits a year to building, and other employment, sites in the past five years.
