by isleofman.com 24th April 2007
A court has been told how a 17 year-old, who died in care from a drug overdose, admitted smoking and injecting heroin for a couple of months prior to her death.

Nadine Smith, who died in December 2005 in the care of Manx Family Services, had requested a residential rehabilitation placement in the UK to try to come off drugs but was unable to secure a place as she was under 18.

Stuart Peters reports:

The inquest at Douglas courthouse today (Monday) has heard from two MFS team leaders and one residential project worker - Collette Coxon, Kerry Jo-Ann Redmond and Louise Hayes.

Kerry Jo-Ann Redmond told the inquest she chatted to Nadine over breakfast on the day she died.

She said the 17 year-old spoke about her plans for the day and didn’t look under the influence of drugs.

When Ms Redmond went up to Nadine’s room about midday there was no reply.

She went into the room and saw Nadine lying face down on her bed and called the ambulance.

The inquest is continuing.
