Nursing home costs promise

An MHK is promising to keep up the pressure on government over its support for people in private nursing homes.

In Tynwald this week North Douglas MHK Bill Henderson called for the principles of the so-called 'Coughlin judgement' in the UK, to be adopted in the Isle of Man.

It would ensure the nursing care element for those in residential homes is paid by the DHSS.

Mr Henderson (left) says some residents are stuggling to meet the costs.

He says it's time for a review of priorities: (first audio clip)

Former Health Minister Steve Rodan says the Manx government has already committed to the plan long-term - but has yet to agree on how to fund it.

Mr Rodan (right) says the costs could be covered by extra national insurance contributions.

He says an important decision will now have to be made:
