Healthcare committee up for discussion in Tynwald

by isleofman.com 14th April 2007
The Health Minister will be asked for details about a new healthcare committee in Tynwald this week.

Michael MHK David Cannan (pictured) will move Eddie Teare explains the purpose of the Clinical Recommendation's Committee as a matter of urgent public importance.

Earlier this week, Mr Cannan told Manx Radio he was astonished the body, set up to advise about Health Service treatments, would NOT include members of the Isle of Man Medical Society.

Mr Cannan obtained a copy of the letter from the society to all its members- saying it wouldn't be represented on the committee, because it believed politicians, not doctors, should make policy decisions about healthcare.

It says the 'Medical Executive of the Society has voted NOT to co-operate or take any part in a new DHSS Clinical Recommendations Committee.'

The Michael member says it is ludicrous the department is proceeding with the group with no medical input.

However, in response, member of the DHSS, Pamela Crowe MLC said it WILL include plenty of medical expertise - but it's main job is to ensure the best possible use is made of public money.
