by isleofman.com 14th April 2007
The Department of Local Government and the Environment is set to continue turning Janet's Corner in Castletown into a "greener" estate.

It's applied to Tynwald for ?4.6 million to fund the next phase of its ?19.6 million redevelopment scheme.

26 new homes will be constructed, together with new drains, sewers and utility services which will serve future phases of the development.

Edward Oldham reports:

The layout of the new homes takes advantage of solar energy; large windows are provided on the southern side, together with solar panels on the roofs of the larger 4 bedroom properties.

All dwellings are insulated to standards exceeding current regulations.

The new homes will also be provided with segregated waste bins to assist with recycling and rainwater butts to collect it for use in the garden.

Rushen MHK Juan Watterson, who's Member with responsibility for Affordable Housing, says energy conservation is a top priority for the department, to help reduce households' energy costs and CO2 emissions.
