A 27 year old man has been given a three month prison sentence suspended for two years by the High Bailiff.

John Furness from Roxborough Walk in Liverpool admitted unlawfully importing two ecstasy tablets and a trace of cocaine, and also a charge of provoking behaviour.

Stuart Peters has the details:

Inspector Richard Power, prosecuting, said the defendant, who was on the Island with friends during the week ending March 23rd for a stag night, was refused entry to the casino because he was drunk. He was abusive and swore at two of the security staff, and was detained by them until police arrived.

Police searched Furness' bedroom at the hotel, where they recovered two ecstasy tablets and a wrap with traces of cocaine.

The defendant accepted he was out of order, and said his recollection of events was hazy. He'd bought the drugs for a pound whilst coming to the Island on the boat.

His advocate said Furness was extremely ashamed and embarrassed. He apologised and said he was unable to explain why he decided to buy the drugs.

Mr Moyle said the immediate plea of guilty had saved the defendant from an immediate custodial sentence.

He also imposed a five year exclusion order and imposed a fine of ?300.
